I had an article due this morning. Yesterday afternoon got away from me for various reasons, and I don't write well (don't do anything well) in those first hours I'm awake. So I sat down at 2 am to write, crawling into bed at 4:30, sending the article before I did. I had nothing on my calendar and no boss to answer to, so I could get real sleep.
Editor emailed me at 8:30 to say she thought I did an excellent job and offered me another assignment. I really enjoy working for this magazine and editor, too.
I love being able to work when I'm most productive and not during an artificially set "work day" standard.

Hi Sue, I followed you back here after reading a comment you made at Allison Winn Scotch's site: the commonly voiced opinion that 'anyone can be a writer.' This drives me CRAZY!! But after awhile, it almost becomes funny. Whenever I tell a smallish group of people about my book, I wait a beat for the inevitable "I know a guy who wrote a book, too!" or "I always wanted to write, but I don't have the time. Here's an idea you can use for your next book!" or "My son is SUCH a great writer; and I'm not just saying that because he's my son. He's written poems that could be published, seriously." Someone always says it. :)

Oh, I love that about freelancing too! I was just on a trip to the East Coast this week, and my boss told me to relax and gather material for an article on Charlottesville. I love being my own boss!
